With "SALCOS® - Salzgitter Low CO2 Steelmaking" - our Group programme for sustainable steel production - we will gradually reduce CO2 emissions in steelmaking by around 95 % by 2033.
We at Ilsenburger Grobblech are on a proficient path to contributing to this mission. Today, we are already able to sustainably produce and supply almost all types of steel from our delivery programme. We have already delivered the first quantities of CO2-reduced quarto plates within Germany and to Scandinavia. In the future, larger projects will also be realised.
To realise our goal, we can access primary material from the sister company Peiner Träger GmbH which can be produced with up to 100 % electricity from renewable energies. This enables us to significantly reduce CO2 emissions per tonne of heavy plate to around 0.56 t.
Taking a step closer towards a circular economy and sustainability, Ilsenburg generates 1.4 MW of electricity with a steam turbine by using idle process heat. Furthermore, the development of a scrap iron return concept is being discussed and put into praxis with first purchasers.
