Cooperation agreement with SMB Schönebecker Maschinenbau GmbH (TMGROUP) on Green Steel

The energy turnaround in Germany is one of the dominant and exciting topics these days. With the gradual conversion of the Salzgitter Group's steel production to hydrogen-based processes (SALCOS® program, Salzgitter Low CO2 Steelmaking), Ilsenburger Grobblech GmbH will take a major step towards sustainability together with its customers. Together with SMB Schönebecker Maschinenbau GmbH, a company of TMGROUP, we signed a cooperation agreement on Green Steel.

Energy companies are on track to significantly increasing the share of renewable energy and producing green electricity, especially from wind power. But how much is the green electricity from wind power worth if the wind turbines needed to generate it are manufactured with an immense CO2 footprint? The steel industry, and Salzgitter AG in particular with its SALCOS® program, wants to counteract this.

As a subsidiary of Salzgitter AG, Ilsenburger Grobblech will supply heavy plates made of green steel with the highest quality and service requirements for wind turbine production starting 2026. Our long-standing partner, Schönebecker Maschinenbau GmbH, a TMGROUP company, is going to benefit from this. As one of the leading German manufacturers of wind towers, SMB will also rely on green steel wind towers in the future.

To this end, both parties have signed a cooperation agreement. The aim is to manufacture the usual high-quality products with a significantly lower CO2 footprint in the near future, as Ilsenburger Grobblech GmbH is already able to procure CO2-reduced steel from Salzgitter Flachstahl via the so-called Peiner Route. The slabs are produced there in the electric arc furnace by using scrap and are a resource-saving alternative on the way to the circular economy.
