Frame Agreement between Aker Solutions and Salzgitter Group signed – sustainably produced Heavy Plates for Offshore-Topside

The partners Aker Solutions, Salzgitter Mannesmann International, Ilsenburger Grobblech and Salzgitter Mannesmann Grobblech have signed a frame agreement including the first delivery of Green Steel plates for offshore-topside.

Under the frame agreement Salzgitter Mannesmann International will be the contract partner for Aker Solutions and provide complex order and contracts management for the various oil and gas, as well as offshore wind projects in the next years.

Salzgitter Mannesmann Grobblech and Ilsenburger Grobblech will be the producing mills for the heavy plate orders from Aker Solutions. Currently some thousand tons are in production for Aker Solutions different offshore projects. This volume includes a first call off for production of app. 100t of low CO2 steel from the Electric Arc Furnace route, produced with green energy.

Starting at the end of 2025 the Salzgitter group will have the SALCOS® technology step by step established and in full operation by 2033 and can provide at the beginning around 1.5 Mio t of green steel. Currently smaller volumes of steel are produced by using 100% recycled steel and green electricity. This reduces emissions significantly.

To start the implementation of green steel in their projects, Aker Solutions ordered one heat (100 MT) of this highly reduced CO2 steel to be utilized on a renewable project off the coast of the UK. Standard steel production generates emissions of approximately 2.3 MT CO2 per MT of steel, and the recycled green steel generates emissions of 0.36 MT CO2. This small heat represents a reduction of 192 MT CO2, which is the approximate equivalent of an average car driving around the earth 190 times.

This is a positive step forward and a success story for both Salzgitter’s and Aker Solutions common targets for a green strategy.
