Heavy plate for shredder project supports the Group's circular economy

The group companies are working together to achieve low-emission steel production. Heavy plate from Ilsenburg is being supplied to the sister company Deutsche Erz- und Metall-Union GmbH (DEUMU) for its new large shredder.

The recent groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of a new shredder at the Salzgitter integrated steelworks site marks a significant milestone in the processing of high-quality scrap grades from old scrap. This is another step in the SALCOS® (Salzgitter Low CO₂ Steelmaking) transformation project. Steel components for the large shredder, which is being built in collaboration with the machine and plant manufacturer Lindemann GmbH and the Belgian company Lybover, are currently being manufactured and assembled at Wilhelm Severt Maschinenbau GmbH's premises in Vreden.

The housing of such a plant requires over 110 tons of welded parts, 90 tons of which come from Ilsenburg alone. Wilhelm Severt Maschinenbau GmbH is responsible for all stages of the process, from cutting and welding to the final assembly of the shredder. The company is also currently building elements for two further shredders of this type and a shear made from Ilsenburg heavy plate at its Vreden plant.

By making this contribution, we are actively supporting the circular economy at Salzgitter AG. It is not only steel from the Group's own production that is being used to restructure the company. Instead, the large shredder ensures that steel scrap will be recycled to produce CO2-reduced raw materials in the future, which can then be processed into heavy plate for use in transforming the energy supply, infrastructure and economy.
