The bridge over the river Saale near Salzmünde, currently under construction as part of the A143 western bypass around Halle, is being built using 4,300 tonnes of heavy plate from Ilsenburg. This major project is carried out by our long-standing partner, the Max Bögl Group. The steel structure is due to be completed and pushed across the river Saale this year.

Around 99% of total 2,000 kilometres of federal highways in the German Unity Transport Projects have been completed or are in the implementation phase. The A 143, Halle western bypass, is one of the last remaining projects and is intended to complete the double ring road around Halle and Leipzig, relieving the city of Halle of interregional through traffic. The federal/state project company DEGES has awarded the contract for the construction of the new Saale crossing at Salzmünde to the Max Bögl Group.

The technically challenging project involves three parts: a four-metre deep noise barrier tunnel, a river bridge and a foreshore bridge on the other side of the river above the Saale floodplain. A closed glass enclosure on the river bridge will provide noise protection for the surrounding area. All heavy plate for this massive structure is being supplied by Ilsenburg. Around 4,300 tonnes of our quality plates will be used in the bridge structure and as deck plates by the time it is completed. “As a long-standing partner in bridge construction, we are particularly pleased to be able to contribute to the realization of this major project with our products," says Martin Knauff, Senior Sales Manager at Ilsenburger Grobblech GmbH, describing the company's involvement. This is made possible by the group-wide cooperation with our sister company Salzgitter Mannesmann Stahlhandel GmbH and in particular the Fürth branch, acting as coordinator.

ILG has been supplying heavy plate for the steel structure since January 2024 and the material has now been delivered on time and in full. The bridge is scheduled to be lifted over the river Saale in July 2025. The bridge is expected to be completed in 2027.
