Norsk Stål AS intents to source heavy plates made of sustainable SALCOS® steel

The Nordic countries are among the driving forces behind the transition to a CO2-neutral economy in Europe. In addition to the available raw materials, industry plays a crucial role. As Norway's largest steel distribution company, our long-time partner Norsk Stål AS supports the decarbonization of the economy and intends to source low CO2 heavy plates from Salzgitter’s SALCOS® route, the first order is already placed. With this agreement, Norsk Stål AS not only expands its offer to its customers, but also contributes to the company's sustainable orientation.
Scandinavia is at the forefront of the transition to a green economy, both in terms of the supply of key raw materials and the establishment of entirely new industries. Norsk Stål AS, the traditional Norwegian steel trader with more than 200 years of company history, supplies the wind, offshore, shipbuilding, construction and engineering industries in Norway and supports the development of a sustainable society with its ambitious corporate goal to reduce the Scope 3 emissions by 55% before the end of 2030. Since these emissions mainly consist of purchased steel and metals, initiatives like SALCOS® - Salzgitter Low CO2 Steelmaking are immensely important to the stockholder.

With this agreement, Norsk Stål AS takes another step on the journey towards carbon neutrality and further underlines the importance of its long-standing partnership with Ilsenburger Grobblech GmbH. "We are very pleased with this decision, which sends a signal to the Scandinavian market, as the availability of green steel will be a key driver of decarbonization in commercial distribution," explains Thorsten Gintaut, Managing Director Sales at Ilsenburger Grobblech.
Salzgitter AG paves the way for low carbon steel production with the SALCOS® program. With a gradual transition to hydrogen-based processes, up to 95% of carbon emissions in steel production can be eliminated by 2033 onwards. Ilsenburger Grobblech can already be supplied with low carbon steel from the group's own plant in Peine. The slabs are produced in the electric arc furnace using scrap metal. The heavy plates from this route have a global warming potential (GWP) of 590.9 kg of CO₂ equivalent per ton, saving 75% of CO2 emissions compared to conventional production.
