„Rion Antirion“-Bridge (Greece)

This suspension bridge, named after the former Greek Premier Harilaos Trikoupis, connects the mainland of western Greece near Patras with the Peloponnese peninsular. 2,500 m in length, it is one of the longest bridges in the world. Instead of a 40 minute ferry crossing, it now takes only 5 minutes to cross the bridge. This structure, which was erected after six years of construction time at a cost of €740 million, is constructed, according to the Franco-Greek consortium Gefyra that built the bridge, so that it can withstand earthquakes with a magnitude of 7.5 on the Richter scale. In 2002 and 2003 the company Ilsenburger Grobblech GmbH supplied approximately 8,800 to. of heavy plate, which included the grades S460M and S460 ML, to the British steel constructor Cleveland Bridge in Darlington.
