The Biggest Railway Swing Bridge over the Suez Canal (Egypt)

The El-Ferdan Bridge over the Suez Canal is the biggest swing bridge in the world. It was erected between September 1998 and October 2001, having a length of 640 m and a height of up to 60 m.

The entire bridge structure consists of two swing bridges, each with a total weight of approx. 5,000 to. The two swing bridges are arranged on the east and west sides of the Suez Canal.

Their spans of 150 m - 340 m - 150 m make them the biggest of their type since the day the bridge was handed over to the Egyptian state railway in January 2001. The construction time was 30 months.

The bridge was built by KSH Stahlbau Hannover GmbH. This is one of the most important projects in Egypt for the improvement of the infrastructure on the Sinai Peninsular.
